Assertiveness is the raw material of communication, self management and influence. Many of us work in an environment where our achievement is often dependent on the efforts of others. By understanding how we and others behave in different circumstances and changing our attitude and approach, a marked improvement in our effectiveness can be achieved.

This course offers participants practical guidance to anyone who needs to develop their assertiveness skills for a range of workplace situations. Participants will gain the tools and techniques to build their self- esteem and boost their confidence.  They will gain the necessary knowledge and skills that assist them to become more assertive in a range of situations and thereby increase their effectiveness and ability to influence others.

  • Understand and identify the differences between assertive, submissive and aggressive behaviour
  • Understand your rights to be assertive and how to exercise those rights
  • Recognise your own style, behaviours and strengths and development areas  
  • Identify and understand the link between assertiveness, confidence and self-esteem and establish what limits our being assertive
  • Assess why assertive behaviour is fundamental to influencing and persuading others and the right language and approach for influencing others
  • Understand how use of words, tone of voice and body language can aid assertiveness and improve ability to interpret the non-verbal element of the message
  • Explore and practice the components of assertive communication

Target Audience

This course is for anyone who feels they would like to gain a better understanding of their own personal communication style in order to be able to behave assertively with others. It is also for people who feel that they have difficulty getting their ideas across in a positive or effective way, in getting what they need or persuading others of their point of view.
