Performance Appraisal Skills

Appraisals were originally designed to ensure that, at the very least, team members had one opportunity a year to discuss their role - how they were doing, what was working and what was not and what they needed to focus on in the coming year. Today however, appraisals exist in most organisations as part of a performance management process and as such are part of this process rather than one off, isolated and heavily loaded events.

This course highlights the benefits of appraisals and performance reviews. It allows the participants to learn and practice the key skills required to plan for and hold effective review meetings which build on relationships by motivating and focusing their team members.

• Understand the purpose and benefits of appraisals and performance reviews
• Plan to avoid the pitfalls involved with carrying out appraisals and performance review
• Identify the role and responsibilities of both appraiser and appraisee
• Planning and preparation with specific emphasis on gathering supporting evidence and data
• How to structure an effective, balanced review meeting
• Learn how to facilitate a participative discussion by listening effectively and providing clear, specific and motivational feedback
• How to utilise effective questioning to help the appraisee’s self review and come up with their own solutions
• How to tackle performance issues effectively and confidently, remaining fair and consistent during the discussion, and define areas for appraisee development
• Learn how to set SMART objectives – both performance and development objectives
• How to facilitate personal development planning

The course is suited to those who are new to appraisals or have limited experience in this area.
