Problem Solving & Decision Making

Effective problem solving and decision making requires a balance between calculated risk taking, a robust approach to analysing situations and the ability to learn from experience. However, decisions often have to be made under pressure or ‘on the run’, without the luxury of long and careful analysis and consultation. To be able to do this well, individuals have first to practice and demonstrate a discipline of thorough problem solving and decision making.

This course covers problem solving and decision making methodology, providing practical guidance using case studies to ensure that the skills learned can be immediately transferred to the workplace.

Objectives

• Apply an organised approach to problem solving and utilise “end in mind” problem solving
• Define objectives, solutions and key areas of concern
• Utilise controlled but creative thinking skills to reach effective solutions
• Learn how to involve others for a wider appreciation of the problem
• Be able to apply different methods of problem solving and have solved some problems using a range of techniques, including the Onion technique, the Systemic approach, & the 5 I’s model
• Identify and evaluate options and solutions 
• Be able to assess the impact of decisions
• How to plan and implement the solution
• How to garner support and gaining commitment from proposed implementers
